Fee
A fee of 75.90 EUR applies for the issuance of a passport, this fee is 30 EUR for children under the age of 12. The fee must be paid directly to the city service upon application. Payment can be made with a credit or debit card.
Waiting period and delivery
The passport is produced centrally in the Austrian State Printing Office for the whole of Austria, which is why a waiting period of 5 to 6 working days from the day on which the application was made can be expected. The new passport is delivered via registered letter to the domestic residence or desired address (e.g. place of work) of your choice.
Emergencies
Emergency passport:
Immediate issuance, fee: 75.90 EUR or 30 EUR for children under the age of 12.
(short validity period, cannot be used for entry into the USA or Turkey)
One-day express passport:
delivered on the afternoon of the next working day by DHL, fee: 220 EUR or 165 EUR for children under the age of 12.
Express passport:
Waiting time of 2 to 3 working days, fee: 100 EUR or 45 EUR for children under the age of 12.
Austrians abroad
Austrians residing abroad may also apply for their passport at any passport authority in Austria.
In addition to the commonly required documents, proof of the main residence in the form of an up-to-date residence certificate (no older than four weeks) must be submitted. Austrians residing abroad must appear at the city service in person before applying with the required documents in order to initiate a verification of citizenship. The passport application can be made following confirmation of lawful Austrian citizenship of the person applying for the passport by the responsible embassy. You can find more information here.
Please note:
- The passport must be applied for in person in the city service.
- If lost travel documents or travel documents reported as stolen are found, they must be submitted to the passport authority for invalidation without undue delay. Further use without notification is a criminal offence.
- All passports are valid until the end of their term. However, re-issuance may be applied for at any time as required. In cases of marriage and/or name change, a new passport must be applied for.
- Old passports are invalidated in the course of application for a new passport.
- In general, the city service provides advice on passport and visa regulations in the countries of destination, for example, via the homepage of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
- The Ministry of Foreign Affairs generally recommends carrying a valid travel document every time you cross a border.
- The new biometric passport can, as before, be applied for at any passport office in Austria, regardless of domestic residence.
- All required documents must be submitted in the original form.
- Passport photos must depict the person with a neutral facial expression and comply with the passport photo criteria.
